titleCapture Process:

BOAT RAMP

Definition: A sloping construction to facilitate launching or retrieving vessels from water

Alternate Terms: Slip way

  •          Capture as a 2D polyline along the centre of the feature

  •          The location is plotted from orthorectified imagery

  •          Locations can be obtained from other datasets, existing mapping, address details, tourist publications, organisations, or Government websites or other source material.

  •          Extend the feature to a minimum of 30 metres if required, otherwise show as is.

  •          The landward end of the boat ramp extends past the defined coastline or shoreline. (visible on image)

  •          Extend the seaward end of the ramp into the water to the end of the construction

BREAKWATER

Definition: A solid structure built to break the force of waves, sometimes detached from the coast, protecting a harbour, river mouth, anchorage, or waterfront facilizes.

Alternate Terms: Mole

  •          Capture as a 2D polyline along the centre of the feature

  •          The location is plotted from orthorectified imagery

  •          Locations can be obtained from existing mapping, Local Government websites, maritime charts, maritime organisations, or other datasets.

  •          Capture features with a length greater than 25 metres

  •          The Feature Type “Coastline” follows the shape of the breakwater into the sea

DRY DOCK

Definition: An artificial basin fitted with gate or caisson into which a vessel may be floated and from which the water may be pumped out to expose the keel of the vessel.

Alternate Terms: Floating dry dock, Graving dock

  •          Capture as a 2D polyline along the centre of the feature

  •          The location is plotted from orthorectified imagery

  •          Locations can be obtained from existing mapping, Local Government websites, maritime charts, maritime organisations, address details or other datasets.

  •          Capture features with a length greater than 25 metres

  •          The landward end of the dry dock can extend past the coastline or shoreline

GROYNE

Definition: An artificial wall-like structure constructed of timber, stone, concrete, or steel, usually extending roughly perpendicular to the shoreline or coastline, and designed to protect the shore from erosion or to trap sand.

Alternate Terms:

  •          Capture as a 2D polyline along the centre of the feature

  •          The location is plotted from orthorectified imagery

  •          Locations can be obtained from existing mapping, Local Government websites, maritime charts, maritime organisations, or other datasets.

  •          Capture features with a length greater than 25 metres

  •          The landward end of the groyne can extend past the defined coastline

  •          The Feature Type “Coastline” does not follow the shape of the groyne into the sea.

JETTY

Definition: A public or commercial structure extending into the water to afford a berthing place for vessels or to serve as a pleasure promenade.

Alternate Terms: Pier

  •

  •          Capture as a 2D polyline along the centre of the feature

  •          The location is plotted from orthorectified imagery

  •          Locations can be obtained from existing mapping, Local Government websites, maritime charts, maritime organisations, or other datasets.

  •          The landward end of the jetty either abuts or is coincidence with the coastline or shoreline

  •          The Feature Type “Coastline” does not follow the shape of the jetty into the sea.

  •          In marinas, merge adjacent small pontoons which protrude from the through jetty (walkway) into a multi-line feature. The length of these combined pontoons is not used to calculate the Upper Scale value. These are classified with an Upper Scale of 1:25 000 no matter the combined length. The length of the through jetty (walkway) is used to calculate its Upper Scale value e.g., In a marina, a long through jetty (walkway) is captured as a single feature and has a length of 300 metres. This will then have an Upper Scale value of 1:100 000. The small pontoons that come off this through jetty (walkway) are all merged and given an Upper Scale value of 1:25 000 no matter the combined length of the lines.

  •          In the Textnote field, the through jetty (walkway) is labelled jetty. (The smaller merged jetties are not labelled.)

  •          SEE upperscale information relating to “jetty”

SEAWALL

Definition: A solid structure usually of concrete masonry or earth, built to prevent erosion or encroachment by the sea.

Alternate Terms:

  •          Capture as a 2D polyline coincident with the coastline or shoreline

  •          The location is plotted from orthorectified imagery

  •          Locations can be obtained from existing mapping, Local Government websites, maritime charts, maritime organisations, or other datasets.

  •          Capture feature with a length greater than 25 metres

  •          Capture the length of the feature coincidence with the coastline or shoreline for the length of the feature.

WHARF LINE

Definition: A structure usually built either parallel to the shore or at the end of a jetty to provide for the berthing of vessels for the loading and unloading of goods and passengers.

Alternate Terms:

  •          Capture as a 2D polyline along the centre of the feature

  •          The location is plotted from orthorectified imagery

  •          Locations can be obtained from the Queensland Department of Transport or, Local Government websites, existing mapping, or tourist publications or other source material.

  •          Capture features with a length greater than 25 metres

  •          The landward end of the wharf line is shown coincidence with the coastline or shoreline for the length of the feature.

  •          Features less than 25 metres in length are not captured.

  •          For features with a width greater than 25 metres, capture as a Feature Type “Wharf Area”.

  •          SEE upperscale information relating to “wharf line”

A Persistent Feature Identifier (PFI) is generated for each feature at the point of creation in the database. The value of the PFI will stay with the feature through all changes to the feature (both spatial and non-spatial) until the feature is retired. (See Persistent and Unique Feature Identifiers)

UFI

No

Text

A Unique Feature Identifier (UFI) is generated for each new feature at the point of creation in the database (at this point the PFI and UFI will be the same). The value of the UFI will stay with the feature through all changes to the feature (both spatial and non-spatial) unless the feature is split into multiple other parts. If the feature is split, the separate parts will retain the original PFI but new UFI’s will be generated for the split parts. (See Persistent and Unique Feature Identifiers)
